I am participating in the August Poetry Postcard Challenge this month. Each day, I send a new postcard with a poem on the back to a recipient on the group list. We began on July 27, but I am posting these a few days late, so that my pen pal can see them first. Enjoy!

April Love Letter
I love your ridiculous. I love
your plastic molded flaws.
I love your obnoxious
colors, your fluorescent pinks
and pea greens. I love the prank
of you. You are the salt
in my coffee and the sugar
in my gas tank. I love
the surprise of finding you,
one morning, in the most
never thought of places.

The Woman I Wanted to Be
carefully picks tobacco leaves
from the tip of her tongue. She doesn’t care
that her nails are uneven and undone.
She wears black eyeshadow so often, residue
lingers on her naked lids. She doesn’ t work
behind a desk. Instead, she litters lines
of poetry on the floor of her studio,
knowing that no one will pick them up.
This is also in response to my Mindfulness Month exercise on the self-portrait as I want to be seen.

Please note: I’m a little behind on posting and writing, due to some increased workload at my day job. However, I hope to get back on track this week.

New Year’s Eve
The big man leaned
into me, winked
and asked:
“Can you keep a secret?”
I swallowed hard on my scotch
smiled wide
and prayed that I could.

In Some Places
We erase faces. Carve spaces
where noses and ears once rested.
We are not arrested. We are lifted
on shoulders, gifted with fat jewels
of praise. We are proud
of what we erase.
Even in the absence of features
we recognize
our small and disfigured victories.

Free to Pass
(in response to a poetry postcard I received from Mary Ruth Donnelly)
The path you are on
lists to the left, is covered
in brambles and bends
into the dark. Even though
you are walking on familiar
ground, your feet slip easily
into well-worn grooves.
Never fear:
you are safe on your journey.

What I Know About Missing Sleep
I wake to a rounded world
where even my walk wobbles.
I weave around corners, careen
from moment to moment
without memory. I find myself
in a room I barely recognize
wondering how the world was wrapped
in cotton, without me ever knowing.

After focusing on sensory awareness, I will be turning the focus towards personal awareness and mindfulness.
My husband really enjoys taking self-portraits. With his little cell phone camera, he has sent me pictures of him eating carrots, reading books, grading papers, and making funny faces. I, on the other hand, am not too wild about self-portraiture. I have a few pictures of myself that I like, but other than that, I discard most of the photos I take of myself.
For today’s exercise, I would like to create a self-portrait as I want to be seen by the world. The catch is that it doesn’t have to be a photograph. I can create a self-portrait in any medium I choose. Hopefully, I can channel a little of my husband’s bravado.

Wisconsin, 1885
The misery whip’s teeth sink
in the trunk, teetering
like a drunk. With his silent
partner, Sven begins to saw. Hands frozen,
to the metal handle, he pulls
with all his strength, then surrenders
as his partner pulls him back. Progress
is slow. On both good and bad days,
the misery whip reminds him of his marriage,
the times he must drag her along
like a cord of wood and the times
he must be dragged. Today, he only thinks
of warm coffee and his long walk home.

After focusing on sensory awareness, I will be turning the focus towards personal awareness and mindfulness.
I spend a lot of my time imagining what my future will be like. I’ve done this since I was a teenager. I dream up an image of what my life will be like, if I follow a certain path or choose to pursue a particular opportunity. The funny thing is that my reality often conflicts with my preconceived idea. After all these years, I haven’t gotten any better at predicting what will happen.
For my exercise today, I would like to create a “Postcard from the Future.” I would like to imagine my life (or a part of my life) in 5 years. What will be different? What will be the same? I can choose to create this postcard in any medium, although a poem may be the most effective.

At the Hotel Breakfast Bar
We don’t eat when we’re not hungry. We eat
when we are full. We eat until
there’s nothing left, except
ghosts of scrambled eggs and fluorescent
Lucky Charms dust. We lick the cooling
waffle griddle, raid the toaster’s crumb tray.
We steal oatmeal packets, screw the hot water.
Still not hungry and not entirely satisfied,
we finally eye each other, our plump
legs and soft bellies. We are still
a bit too reserved to introduce ourselves
as we clutch our plastic knives and saw.
