Simple Things for Summer

I heard a rumor that folks were posting a Simple Things today, in honor of Christina’s birthday. I actually found Christina’s blog through her Simple Things meme, but came to be a regular reader, because I love having a shot of positivity (and beautiful photography) in my Google reader on a regular basis. And like with all good blogs, I ended up discovering other blogs I enjoy, just by reading hers. So, thank you Christina & happy birthday!

And now for my summer edition of my favorite simple things right now:

  1. A non-humid day, immediately following a ridiculously humid day.
  2. Grilling dinner on our rooftop deck, three times this week (and counting).  There’s also a grilling party at a friend’s house tomorrow. Can I just say that I love grilling food?
  3. Waking up with the light.
  4. Staying up with the light, later than I normally do.
  5. Getting blueberries for my cereal from the farmer’s market rather than the freezer case.
  6. Heck, the farmer’s market altogether.
  7. Short Fridays.
  8. Three vacations in one summer. The next one starts next Thursday, when my dad comes to town.
  9. Seeing my husband more often than during the school year.
  10. Summer movies in the park. Tonight is The Muppet Movie!

Those are my simple things that are bringing me joy this summer. What are yours?

January’s Simple Things

Christina at Soul Aperture is hosting Simple Things once again, but with a humanitarian twist. For every blogger who participates in the prompt, she will donate $1 to Doctors Without Borders for Haiti Earthquake Relief, up to $250.  Not only do I love this prompt, but I love this idea of donating. If you haven’t participated in Simple Things before,  you should do it today. Start here to play along.

January Simple Things, Verb Edition:

  • Walking without crutches, even if it’s more of a step-slide at the end of a long day
  • Receiving an ankle rub at the end of that long day, by my loving husband
  • Waking up the next morning with a slightly stronger, slightly less sore leg
  • Finishing Stookie Stackhouse #8 in the bath this morning
  • Feeling slightly bittersweet about finishing, since I don’t have #9 in possession
  • Having a full day to myself to catch up on writing
  • Wearing sweatpants and a hoodie throughout the whole day
  • Seeing a glimpse of the larger theme of my poems, after years of thinking I was aimless
  • Listening to two new albums by Minneapolis musicians: Dessa’s A Badly Broken Code and Bethany Larson’s Sticks and Stones
  • Loving that these two women have totally different musical styles, but equally wonderful poetic lyrics

Those are my Simple Things for today.  What are yours?

Fall’s Simple Things

The Simple Things prompt is back for the fall, hosted by Christina at Soul Aperture. I love this prompt because it encourages me to slow down, pay attention, and cultivate a little gratitude for my life.  To play along, visit this prompt and post a list of simple things that you are enjoying right now.

My simple things include:

  • The abundance and variety of squash we’ve been enjoying this fall.
  • Working half days and quarter days
  • Re-watching one of my favorite TV shows and calling it “research for my final project”
  • Baking cranberry and chocolate chip cookies for a dinner gathering
  • Eating some of the raw cookie dough, throwing caution to the wind
  • The way my husband makes me laugh
  • Anticipating Thanksgiving, in all of its time-off, family visits, and big meal wonderfulness
  • Colder weather, which causes my kitties to snuggle more
  • Coming off a weekend where I got to spend time with my husband, study, and relax by myself… it’s been rare to get all three in lately
  • Winding down my first class in my grad program
  • Seeing the syllabus for the next class – I’m such a nerd!
  • Golden fall light in the mornings (when it’s sunny)
  • Sleeping in, even if it means I still get up earlier than I wanted

Those are the simple things that are filling my life right now.  How about you?

Don’t forget to check out the other bloggers who are participating in the prompt today!

Simple Things for Today

Over at Be Present, Be Here, a blog I read regularly, Liz decided to participate in a prompt I hadn’t seen before called Simple Things.  Christina at Soul Aperture asks others to list the simple things in life, the things that make life worth living that we may forget to notice. (Check out the inaugural post and this month’s post for examples.)  Considering the pity party I’ve been hosting for myself since my injury, I thought it would be a great idea to play along and cultivate a little gratitude and awareness in my life.

Even though I’m a little bit late, here is my list of simple things for the month:

Crusty french bread with olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper
Waking up before my husband and having the living room quietly to myself (this is truly rare)
The smell of the chocolate lavender flowers my boss gave me this week
Breaking the leaves and rubbing the oils on my finger tips
Popsicles on a humid, muggy day
Three day weekends all summer and the thought of actual free time
Early morning sun and the trill of birds outside my window
Stretching my arms and back
Kissing my husband’s neck and breathing in the smell of his hair
The guy I saw yesterday, dancing to his boom box in the park
Finally buying the Le Tigre album and loving every song
A glad of ruby, fruity wine at the end of the week

Those are my Simple Things for the month. I hope I’ll remember to play along each month, to remind myself of all of the little surprises and wonders in my world.
